An exhibition by well-known artist Oona Hyland entitled ‘Active Forgetting’ was launched at An Gailearaí in Gaoth Dobhair at the weekend.
Oona, who spent many years involved in the art scene in Donegal where she dedicated her practice to printmaking, unveiled a new solo body of work which includes film, sculpture, installation as well as prints.
Oona said her interests are interlocked in the materiality of print itself and what such processes can convey towards a conceptual art practice.
“My method is a vehicle to articulate processes of memory, concepts of boundary, resistance, erosion, and decay,” she said.
“In this sense my work tends to draw from traditional printmaking even as I expand into various other media, such as drawing, sculpture, film and video. In my works I argue that the knowledge of printmaking can be applied to existential matters.”
During the launch poet Cathal Ó Searcaigh read a poem, while Sung Sang Sik, a traditional Korean drummer, currently on his first ever European tour, also performed.
The exhibition will run for a few weeks and the Gailearaí is open 11am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 1 to 8pm on Wednesdays.
