Online booking system is ‘excluding’ elderly passengers, claims councillor

by Louise Doyle

A DONEGAL councillor has claimed elderly public transport users are being ‘left behind’ because of a pre-booking online system for seats.

In an open letter to Transport Minister Eamon Ryan, Cllr Michael McClafferty voiced his concerns that many older people are choosing not to go out because of the complicated system.

He said it is wrong that senior citizens who have contributed so much to society are being excluded from enjoying what should be available to everyone.

He said not every older person is familiar with technology, but that that is no reason for them to be denied access.

The letter, seen by the Donegal News, states: “There are serious difficulties faced by senior citizens in accessing bus tickets online. Not every senior citizen is familiar with computers or has someone to teach them.

“This has resulted in many elderly individuals refraining from going out altogether, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s disheartening to hear about the €2 euro service fee and instances where elderly individuals were refused entry onto buses due to not booking in advance.

“Please understand how frustrating this situation must be for senior citizens who have contributed so much to society. They deserve to be treated with respect and provided with accessible transportation options.”

Cllr McClafferty has called for the abolishment of the advance booking system for old aged pensioners on all public transport.

“I encourage you to address these issues and consider abolishing the booking in advance rule for OAPs on all public transport, allowing them to pay the driver either by card or cash on pick-up as has been done traditionally.

“Rural Ireland and its aging population deserve attention and care from the government. I hope you will take these concerns into account and find a solution that benefits the senior citizens of Donegal.”

The Donegal News contacted Bus Éireann for a response.

It had not been received at the point of going to press yesterday.
