A €1.2million historic, country house in Donegal is believed to have been destroyed in an overnight blaze.
Donaghmore House, Castlefinn was engulfed by flames last night as three fire tenders from Letterkenny, Stranorlar and Strabane battled the blaze. It is understood the fire was brought under control in the early hours of this morning.
The home, which has been vacant for some time, is believed to have been associated with the Spence family from c.1750 until c.1800. At least two members (father and son) served as ministers of the church at the time.
The four-storey, 6,400 sq ft house appears to have ceased to have been used as a rectory in the 1860’s and the present, more substantial house, may have been built a short time after.
The Victorian country house sits on 90 acres of land with a detached cast iron conservatory, two gate lodges, walled gardens and a range of outbuildings. It was valued at €1.2million by Daft.ie in August 2017.
A full investigation has been launched on the blaze.
