“Once in the final anything can happen”.
The words of Letterkenny rower Sinead Jennings earlier this week struck a chord when, together with Claire Lambe, she qualified for tomorrow’s Lightwight single sculls Olympic final in Brazil.
The Irish team finished third behind Holland and Canada – also recording the third quickest time of this afternoon’s semi-finals – in Rio.
Sinead (39) finally made her Olympic debut today, aged 39 years, earlier this week. The mother of three can now look forward to an Olympic final.
Having spent sixteen years trying to reach the Olympics, Sinead now stands a 50/50 chance of winning an Olympic medal. Dreams really don’t get much better than this.
Speaking to the Donegal News last week, Sinead said that it would be a dream come true to reach the Olympic final.
“We’re there or thereabouts. The margins are tiny as there’s only two or three seconds separating the top twelve boats. If we come out on the right side of those margins and row the best possible race we can still make the final. Once in the final anything can happen,” she said.
