Oldtown Bridge ‘in good condition’ – councillors told

A Letterkenny councillor has been given an assurance that the town’s busy Oldtown Bridge is regarded as being in “a good condition” by Donegal County Council.

The issue of the bridge – which has been subject to commentary on social media in particular about its safety – was raised by Cllr Donal Coyle at the September meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council.

Pointing out that if you read some of the comments you would nearly get the picture that the bridge is “not fit for purpose,” he said there was a need to reassure people in relation to the safety of the bridge.

In an official response, he was informed that like all bridges in the county, Oldtown Bridge is regularly assessed as part of the local authority’s bridge inspection programme.

The last inspection that was carried out on the bridge assessed that the arch and deck of the bridge are in a good condition.

The inspection of the bridge showed that the bridge has previously been strengthened through the process that is known as guniting and
grouting.

There are some superficial cracks on the parapet walls following a vehicle strike, and arrangements are currently being made to have these cracks repaired.

As part of the bridge inspection programme another assessment will be carried out in early 2026.
