OISIN Cannon has decided to run for the position of Public Relations Officer at the forthcoming annual county convention.

With the sitting officer, Jim Quinn, confirming to this newspaper two weeks ago that he was not going to seek a second term in the position, the PRO post will be up for grabs at the convention on Sunday December 15th at the Mount Errigal Hotel.

Six people were nominated for the position but, so far, Letterkenny Gaels clubman Cannon has been the only one to declare his candidacy.

Cannon confirmed his intention to run via his Facebook and Twitter accounts on Friday night.

Cannon is already one of the administrators of the Donegal GAA Facebook and Twitter pages and last night he told the Donegal News that the PRO job is a role he has set his eyes on.

“I thought long and hard about it and I’ve decided to let my name stay in the running,” he said.

“I’d like to see the website revamped and get more interaction. While the social media sites have been doing well I think Donegal can do more and get more interaction with supporters online and really get our message across on these platforms.

“We are active, but you can always do more and I’d like to attempt to really take Donegal GAA into the digital age.”

The 23-year old works as a GAA coach in schools around the Finn Valley area and is involved as a statistician with Donegal minor manager Declan Bonner.

His father, Charlie, served as PRO in 2003 and 2004, while he double-jobbed as PRO while county treasurer in 2005.

Damian Dowds (Burt) and Mary Kelly (Ardara) have confirmed that they will not be contesting the position, while Quinn has declined to seek re-election. Ed Byrne of Killybegs and Edward Molloy of Ardara have also been nominated, but have yet to publicly signal their intentions.
