The area in question was identified some time back as one in need of enhancement and, in cooperation with a local landowner the plot of land has been transformed into a valuable addition to the town’s environmental landscape.

Funding of €35,000 was sourced by the former Letterkenny Town Council under the Public Area Enhancement Scheme from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.

Work was carried out by the Town Council’s Open Spaces team under Town Gardener, David Donnelly.

Speaking before the launch Cllr McBride explained that as the work progressed it was felt the development would also be a fitting tribute to honour the former chairman of the local Tidy Towns committee, the late Jim McCormick.

“Jim pioneered town enhancement projects for years and proved to be one of the driving forces behind Letterkenny’s progress in the annual Tidy Towns competition. His efforts through his committee and the various residents associations ensured the growth of the town was matched and enhanced with the development of its overall appearance.”

The Mayor concluded that tomorrow’s ceremony would allow them to recognise Mr McCormick’s huge achievements and the ongoing progress of the Tidy Towns Committee as well as the progress made over the years in cooperation with Donegal County Council.

“Jim McCormick was such a man and believed in the common good ahead of individual achievement. I would hope that this garden can serve as an inspiration to the next generation of young people and would call upon them to take up the mantle of community engagement, one grasped by Jim at every opportunity.”
