WHEN Margaret (Peg) Fox and her husband John first came to Letterkenny from England back in 1971, they’d intended to stay here for only a few years.
They’d moved over from Stockport when John took up a new position as Production Manager with Oatfield Sweets.
But when he began to consider a move back to England three years later, Margaret had other ideas. “This is where our true friends are,” she said, deciding there and then that Letterkenny was now home.
Those friends will have been saddened when learning of Margaret’s passing in Letterkenny University Hospital on Saturday.
The Fox family were popular neighbours at 34 Ballyraine Park and John and Margaret a very popular couple.
They had an active involvement in community life over the years and even after John’s passing in 2016, Margaret enjoyed an active lifestyle. She continued her love of travelling and only six months ago, was part of the Joe Mangan Tours trip to Switzerland. She was even making plans for this summer’s tour.
Herself and John travelled far and wide and one fond memory was when they were returning home from a Letterkenny Reunion trip to the US. Two seats had become available in first class and the Reunion committee decided that John and Margaret, the two senior members of the tour, should be upgraded.
The couple also had a love of ballroom dancing and for many years helped organise ballroom dancing classes at St. Conal’s Hospital along with Fergus Cleary. Every Wednesday night, the first hour of the class was given over to dancing with the patients – a class that brought much joy and fun to all involved.
Margaret’s funeral Mass took place on Thursday morning at the Church of the Irish Martyrs with interment afterwards in Conwal Cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Donations in lieu of flowers, if desired, to the Donegal Hospice and Northwest Parkinson’s Association of Ireland c/o any family member.
Margaret will be deeply missed by her loving daughters, Susan and Claire, sons, Graham (Avril), Douglas (Siobhan) and Neil (Caroline), eleven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Ann Fox (England), nieces, nephews and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.
