North west escapes the brunt as Ophelia batters Ireland

DONEGAL and the north west of Ireland has escaped the worst so far as Hurricane Ophelia batters much of Ireland.

The storm claimed three lives as it made its way up the island’s west coast and forecasters say that it should be reaching Donegal about now.

However there has been little evidence of Ophelia compared to the destruction that has been witnessed in places like Cork and Galway.

Malin Head has had gusts of up to 100km but there have been no reports of serious damage so far.

Gardaí are however continuing to advise people to travel only if absolutely necessary and high sided vehicles are being advised to avoid the Termon to Dunlewey Road due to cross winds.

The Harry Blaney Bridge at Carrigart has also been shut in anticipation of Ophelia’s arrival.

More updates as the situation unfolds.
