THE north west region, which includes Donegal, had the highest number of callouts by pest control company Rentokil to deal with flies last year.
Launching its 2023 pest callout data, Rentokil revealed how rats, flies, and midges were the top three pests they dealt with over the last twelve months.
Flies took the lead, making up 24 per cent of the total callouts, with the north west region experiencing a large callout volume for fly-related service requests which includes the counties of Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo,
Flies are recognised as pests due to the inherent health risks they pose to humans, pets, and livestock.
Their ability to infest homes and businesses makes them vectors for diseases like Salmonella and E. coli.
Rats and midges also featured prominently in Rentokil’s 2023 records.
Rats (43 per cent) were yet again the pest with the highest callout volume for Rentokil, with midges at (18 per cent) representing the third highest.
Dr. Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil said: “Throughout 2023, Rentokil has observed a significant increase in pest control service requests across the country including in the north west region, where flies made up a large volume of callout requests in 2023.
“Flies can pose the threat of contaminating food or spreading pathogens, so it is important to ensure that all food in your premises is covered and stored correctly, and not left out in the open. Additionally, these insects can pose an annoyance when found in swarms as their collective excrement can cause a bad smell as well as staining fabrics and walls.”
