THERE will be no repeat of last year’s Capital One Cup heroics for Carl McHugh this season after he saw his Bradford side dumped from the cup at the first hurdle against Huddersfield last night.

The Bantams became the second beaten finalists in successive seasons to be knocked out in the first round after Cardiff (losers on penalties to Liverpool in the 2012 final) who had been sent packing by Northampton Town.

Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat saw Bradford make seven changes to the side that had started their League One campaign with a 2-2 draw away to Bristol City, McHugh one of those changes.

The centre-half from Lettermacaward who started 22 times for Bradford last season – including in the Capital One cup final – signed a new one-year contract with Bradford this summer, was on the bench for the Bristol City game but played the entire 90 minutes in the 2-1 cup defeat to Huddersfield.

There was better luck for Stephen McLaughlin’s Nottingham Forest though as they progressed to the next round following a 3-1 win over Hartlepool United.

Former Finn Harps winger and Clonmany native McLaughlin, who joined Forest from Derry City, has yet to make an appearance for the League One side but was on the bench for Tuesday night’s win.

Meanwhile Everton’s Seamus Coleman continued pre-season with his club in America, coming on as a sub in the 1-0 defeat to Valencia.

Coleman who started and scored a penalty in a shoot-out victory over Juventus, played 82 minutes in the 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid.

Shane Duffy, whose father hails from Letterkenny was on the bench for Everton for the Valencia game. Irish international Duffy played in Everton’s pre-season game against Austria Vienna on July 14th but has not featured on the pitch in the subsequent pre-season games for Roberto Martinez.
