Speaking about the now infamous ‘pact’ between Aontu’s Mary T Sweeney and Fianna Fail’s Pat the Cope Gallagher, speculation about which circulated after a photo was published of them together in Dunfanaghy during the election campaign, Ms. Sweeney repudiated any such alliance.
“There is, nor ever was any such pact” she added “My only pact is with the people of Donegal” she said.
“That photo was orchestrated by Pat the Cope because he’s looking for my transfers” she said. “I usually transfer well and in the last election my transfers went to Thomas Pringle. He was looking to get in on that”.
She said that politics is complex and the only way to understand the intricacies of how it works is put yourself forward to stand in an election yourself. “I learn something new with every election campaign, this time I learned how not to get yourself into a misleading photograph, among other things” she said.
Ms Sweeney participated in no less than six debates throughout her campaign including one in the Law Society at the ATU (Atlantic Technological University), and one in Loreto Community School, Milford.
“I joined every debate I was invited to in order to answer the questions the young people have, which is more than I can say for other parties including Sinn Fein, who did not attend the ATU debate”.
“I applaud all the schools that made an effort to get students registered and to teach them about the complex PR voting system that we have here in Ireland” she said. “That’s what they should be teaching students, instead of this nonsense they are teaching on the SPHE curriculum” she said, referring to the controversial content in regard to sex education that is being taught in schools around the country.
“Young people are disillusioned and we need to engage them” she said.
