No money to fix Glenswilly flooding problem

MAYOR of the Leterkenny Milford Municipal District, Donal Kelly, has expressed his frustration that Donegal County Council cannot find €120,000 to carry out the necessary works to prevent further flooding in Glenswilly.

“Address this issue once and for all otherwise it will happen again without a shadow of a doubt. There is a school beside it with 260 pupils.

People were trapped in their homes for two days and had to carry groceries across fields.

“I am the representative for the area and what I had to listen to. It makes me look as if I am doing nothing about it. Get the work done,” he added.

He said the flooding had happened twice in six months and cost around €30,000 each time to fix.

“In the long run it will save money. If emergency services had to get through there was not a hope that they could have,” Cllr Kelly pointed out.

Seconding the motion Cllr Ciaran Brogan said he was out that road and saw the mess created.

“There was a burst water main on that day too. It erodes public confidence. We need a full report on what went wrong and who is responsible. I think the €120,000 is being exaggerated. I think it lies with the senior roads management team in Lifford. This is an emergency situation,” Cllr Brogan added.

Donegal County Council Roads Engineer David McElwaine told the meeting he understood the comments made.

“Our own crews worked to reinstate the road as soon as possible. In the interim we will try some short term measures to reduce the risk of it recurring,” he added.
