DONEGAL stars Patrick McBrearty and Ryan McHugh will not feature in this year’s Sigerson Cup Final after their Universtity of Ulster team were beaten by DCU in the today’s semi-final at Jordanstown.
McBrearty scored five points for UU and McHugh also notched a score, but it was not enough to get past DCU, for whom Glenswilly goalkeeper Philip O’Donnell impressed between the sticks.
Caolan McGonagle, Nathan Gavigan, and Cian Mulligan were also part of the DCU squad, and they will play UCD in tomorrow’s final.
UU – who had Martin McHugh as part of their management team – came into the game as favourites, but they started slowly and a goal from Monaghan player Shane Carey helped DCU into a 1-5 0-5 lead at the break.
Niall Moyna’s DCU moved six points clear after the break, and while the Belfast side came back into the game with the wind at their backs, they couldn’t get any closer than two points to their opponents, and DCU closed out the game to win by four points.
There was also disappointment for LyIT in their Trench Cup semi-final as they were well beaten by Waterford IT on a scoreline of 4-11 to 1-8.
However, there will be some Donegal interest in the Trench Cup decider, as Kilcar clubman Conor Doherty was part of the Dundalk IT team that defeated Liverpool Hope University in their semi-final today.
