No joy for Harps in North West derby

Finn Harps 2-3 Derry City

Derry City got the better of ten-man Finn Harps tonight in Ballybofey to claim the North West derby bragging rights.

There wasn’t much between the sides in the opening quarter, but Nathan Boyle found the net for Harps in the 22nd minute after Nathan Gartside kicked the ball against the back of Sam Todd.

However, the referee Neil Doyle controversially ruled the goal out and Harps manager Ollie Horgan was furious with the decision.

Derry started to get on top after that, and they had a couple of chances to score, before Colm Deasy was shown a straight red card for a horror tackle on Ciaran Coll.

The sides were level at the break, but Derry opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Ray youngster Aidy Delap fired home.

Harps had chances to equalise through Caolan McAleer and Dan O’Reilly but couldn’t find the goal they desired.

However, the home side did equalise in the 75th minute when Nathan Boyle fired home.

Dan O’Reilly came close to putting Harps into the lead, before Derry went in front again in the 83rd minute when David Parkhouse headed past Ciaran Gallagher.

Derry moved 3-1 ahead in injury-time when Parkhouse capitalised on Gallagher’s mistake to score his second.

Mikey Place scored a penalty in the 96th minute for Harps but it was the last kick of the game and Derry claimed the three points on offer.
