No joy for English in World Championship semi-final

THERE was disappointment for Mark English this afternoon as he missed out on a spot in the 800 metres final at the World Athletic Championships in Tokyo.

English went for it in his semi-final with 200 metres to go, and aimed to secure one of the top two positions which would have sealed an automatic spot in the final.

He finished in a time of 1:45.47 which saw him come third.

The Finn Valley AC man was hoping his time would be good enough to land one of the two spots for the fastest qualifying times but was pushed out after the second semi-final.

Cian McPhillips from Longford won the second semi-final in 14.43.18 and broke English’s Irish 800 metres record in the process.

McPhillips advances through to the final, but unfortunately English will not be joining him.
