Shane Callaghan and Doherty responded with placed balls, but the impressive Max McGinnity kicked three frees late in the half.

Donegal were improved in the second half and they started to cut into their deficit.

Monaghan had Donnachadh Connolly sent off, and scores from Shane Callaghan, Padraig Mac Giolla Bhríde and Luke Clerkin saw the visitors get back to within one.

However, the Farney county kicked the final two points to win the match.

Donegal will now play Cavan away in the quarter-final next week.
