Niamh Kennedy is new Chair of Donegal County Council

THE new Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council is Independent Cllr Niamh Kennedy, based in Killybegs

Fine Gael’s Jimmy Kavanagh from the Letterkenny LEA has been elected Leas-Chathaoirleach of  the council.

They were elected this morning at the council’s Annual General Meeting in County House, Lifford.

It was the first time that the council has sat since the recent local elections which served the purpose of filling the authority’s 37 seats for the next five years.

Aside from deciding the chair and vice-chair, council members will also be appointed to various committees and agencies, including Donegal ETB and the Regional Health Forum.

While gender imbalance remains an issue, the political shape of the council is quite different this time around. Four brand new councillors from the 100% Redress Party have formally taken their seats.

Joy Beard, Tomás Seán Devine, Ali Farren, and Denis McGee are demanding adequate government support for those impacted in the county by the defective blocks crisis.
