Dear Editor
The ever increasing number of Covid infections, including that of the variant strain, can be attributed, I believe, to the vast number of Christmas holidays makers from both Northern Ireland and Great Britain that have come to our shores and to the large numbers of uninhibited family gatherings.
We have seen to our cost that our porous border with Northern Ireland has become a gateway for those who wish to circumvent the Covid restrictions that are in place in the ports and airports of the Republic of Ireland.
That the Government of the day is complicit in this debacle is truly worrying.
Sidelining the expert medical advice of NPHET in order to outdo parties like Sinn Fein, by a form of delusional chicanery so as to increase their voter base, can only be construed as political folly.
The health of this country is just as important if not more than that of our flailing economy, which will become more relevant Post Brexit.
That we sacrifice lives in order to appease our Northern brethren or those from the UK and abroad, is political populism at its worst.
Lockdown should mean lockdown for everyone, except essential frontline workers including those in retail. It should not mean that every time we have a holiday break, when we get control of this virus, that we open our borders in order to infect or kill further members of our population.
Yours etc
