A LEAVING certificate student from Newtowncunningham is going to take on the challenge of going from Arranmore to Malin Head on horseback in 24 hours.
Clodagh Barry plans to leave the lighthouse on the western seaboard of Arranmore on Saturday, February 22, ride across the county hoping to arrive at Malin Head on Sunday afternoon. The Deele College Raphoe student’s proposed route is 180 km and will take her through Dungloe, Doochary, Glendowan, Letterkenny, on to Bridgend, Buncrana, Fort Dunree, Clonmany, Carndonagh and on to Malin Head.
This is a bit longer than the direct route, but as she is travelling on horseback, Clodagh is keen to stay off the main roads as much as possible.
Due to the distance involved, Clodagh will be using more than one horse, and would like to thank those who have offered the use of their horses for parts of the route.
Clodagh hopes to raise funds for the TREC Ireland Young riders team that is travelling to Italy in September to the TREC World Cup competition.
TREC is a three phase equestrian discipline, that combines three phases; POR (Orienteering), MA (Control of Paces) and PTV (Obstacle & Skills Test) and holds its World Cup only every four years. Clodagh, along with Lisa Moore from Ramelton, are both on the young riders panel for this competition and would be optimistic of making the final team.
The costs of transporting horses to Europe is enormous, so this is the first of a series of fundraisers that will be run.
