THE popular Newmills Corn and Flax Mills outside Letterkenny re-opened to the public on Saturday and staff are looking forward to what will hopefully be a busy summer season.
Major improvement works have been carried out at the centre with the car park area re-surfaced and realigned so that it can now accommodate buses.
Work has also been carried out on the walk-way which leads from the car park to the centre ensuring that it is now wheelchair-accessible.
The iconic water wheel has also been fully restored and is operating once again.
Tour guide Tony McHugh said the improvements will all help to make the centre a much more attractive place for visitors.
“We actually opened to the public a little later than usual this year because the mill was painted,” he said.
“But all the work has been completed now and we’ve been enjoying a busy week which is great to see.”
Local councillor Donal Coyle visited the centre this week and he was high in his praise for the work that has been completed.
“It’s great to see that it has opened to the public once again,” he said.
“The place has been spruced up and the water wheel is back operating again.
“The improvements carried out to the car park area are also very welcome and credit to everyone involved, it’s a fine facility and a lovely attraction.”
The flax mills will open to the public through to the end of September. It’s open everyday except Mondays.
