Newly resurfaced car park ‘destroyed’ over rally weekend

by Dionne Meehan

A LOCAL councillor has expressed his disappointment after the newly resurfaced car park at Muckish Railway Walk was “destroyed” by tyre marks over the weekend.

Used as a “diffing track” over the Donegal International Rally weekend, Cllr McClafferty said it has now been left looking like a “race track”.

“The Muckish Railway Walk is something we are extremely proud of in the area.

“It’s a fantastic amenity, not only for tourists but also for locals and families.

“It has been noted on many occasions how secure families feel taking their children on this walk due to the rural location with no traffic, where children can bring their bikes and enjoy the area safely.

“Seeing the tyre marks all over the car park now diminishes all of this,” he said.

Cllr McClafferty said it required a significant amount of Government funding to get the Railway Walk to this high standard.

“Securing this funding required an enormous amount of work and lobbying – the goal in mind was that it would remain accessible for all of us to enjoy for many years to come,” he said.

Describing the Donegal International Rally being a “fantastic” and “well-organised” event, Cllr McClafferty said there were supervised diffing tracks available in Letterkenny throughout the weekend for such activities.

“I urge everyone to please stop destroying our public car parks and roads.

“Please use the tracks dedicated to these activities instead,” he said.
