THE newly-elected Cathaoirleach of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District Cllr Martin Harley said he is looking forward to the year ahead.
Having been elected to Donegal County Council 16 years ago, this is Cllr Harley’s third time chairing his local electoral area.
Describing it as a “great honour”, he now looks forward to working alongside Leas Cathaoirleach Cllr Patrick McGowan and the county councillors representing his area.
First on his list of priorities is the reintroduction of in-person meetings for his LEA, which have been held online for the past few years.
“I always feel when you are in a meeting face to face you get more done,” Cllr Harley said.
“It is easier to talk about different issues and they are also important to build up relationships with councillors and staff as well.”
During his time as Cathaoirleach, Cllr Harley also hopes to see progress made on the Ten T Project alongside the Barnesmore Greenway.
The Barnesmore Greenway is a 35km stretch of walkway extending from the Twin Towns to Donegal Town, which he believes will make a significant impact on the local area.
“When you see other greenways in different parts of Ireland, there are a lot of other small industries that happen alongside these greenways,” Cllr Harley said.
“There is definitely an economic benefit to our area.
“We are the only electoral area in Donegal that doesn’t have a coastline.
“We are missing out on that but it would be a game changer for us going forward.”
