NEW traffic lights in Letterkenny are posing difficulties for learner drivers and taxis negotiating lengthy tailbacks.
Donegal County Council will tomorrow be asked to revisit the intervals of the new traffic lights system in Letterkenny following mounting complaints from motorists of extreme tailbacks on the Pearse Road.
In the last two weeks, new traffic lights have been put in place at the junction of the Joe Bonnar Road and Neil T Blaney Road, but the lights at the junction of Pearse Road and Justice Walsh Road that are causing most agitation.
Councillor Michael McBride (Ind) said he has been contacted by driving instructors and taxi drivers in the wake of the implementation of the new traffic lights. He will raise the issue at tomorrow’s meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Cllr McBride said the traffic lights seem to be creating more of a hindrance than a help to motorists at the minute.
“Since the traffic lights went in, traffic flows have been affected badly. I have been receiving a lot of calls, particularly from driving instructors and taxi drivers, who are working out at the back Charlie’s Café, saying that traffic is badly backed up making it very difficult for inexperienced drivers to negotiate.”
Cllr McBride has spoken to the roads engineer about the matter. He said the traffic light company is to look at the flow of the traffic over the next few weeks. Depending on their findings, things could be recalibrated.
“New traffic light systems always take a while to fine tune. I know from speaking with other councillors and engineers that a lot of people have been affected by the slowing in the flow of traffic.
“I don’t know the inner workings of traffic light systems but hopefully after the two week monitoring we’ll know a bit more and hopefully be able to alleviate the situation.”
