NEW road signs displaying the new lower 60 kph speed limit on rural roads are typically costing the taxpayer anything between €59 and €311 each.
The cost of replacing the old signs in the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council area alone is likely to run to tens of thousands of euro.
The figures were released following a question on their cost which was submitted by Cllr. Declan Meehan at the monthly meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council.
He was informed that the change to the 60kph speed limit on rural roads is being funded by the Department of Transport.
The projected costs are €252 per post and €59 per sign, or supplementary plate. In the case of a new post with a new sign, the cost is €311.
According to the Council, new posts were only required at junctions between local roads and regional or national roads.
The remaining locations involved replacing an existing 80kph sign with a 60 kph sign or SRL (a standard rural speed) sign, depicted by five black diagonal stripes on an off-white background.
Senior Executive Roads Engineer, David McILwaine said that as the works have just been completed, a full detailed analysis of actual costing has not yet been completed. When it is, it shall be circulated to councillors.
