A RATHMULLAN grandmother has taken great pride in her grandson’s new bread recipe book which he created to help people in Ukraine.
Annie Green of Ray received a copy of appropriately named ‘Knead Peace – Baking for Ukraine’, recently written by her grandson Andrew who lives in Totnes in Devon.
She and the family are looking forward to trying out the apple cake recipe which has proved a huge hit.
The 92 year-old’s son Eugene moved to Totnes where his son Andrew has been a chef and baker for most of his life. Speaking to the Donegal News Andrew explained how he came to write the book to help the plight of those in Ukraine.
“I saw the Instagram Bake Out in Ukraine and really admired their efforts as the bombs literally dropped around their heads. The bakers were there to feed the soldiers which I understand as I know the baking community is so strong.
“I started to compile the recipes for the book shortly after the war started. Usually it would take over a year but in the circumstances I wanted to get it out as soon as possible to help raise funds for the war effort.
“We managed to do it in a couple of months and it is selling well through Amazon and stores like Sainsburys,” said Andrew.
‘Knead Peace’ is currently selling well in Ireland. It retails at £14 and £2.50 from the sale of each book goes to the Ukraine.
“I wanted to do something to help and this is what I know best. I collected favourite recipes from all over and invited feedback with photographs on the recipes people tried.
“The sour dough bread is proving very popular. The cookie recipes are also doing well. There are a few very simple recipes for those only starting out.”
Andrew added that he usually gets back to Donegal about once a year and would have been a frequent visitor when he was younger.
“I have a lot of amazing memories of being in Donegal and I am so delighted to see Granny enjoying the book.”
