New novel intertwines life in Scotland and Donegal

MORE than 50 people attended the launch in Falcarragh on Thursday of a new novel which intertwines life in Scotland and Donegal.
‘The Deep Heart’s Core’ by Marian Docherty was launched in the Shamrock Bar and it was very well  received by the local community who recognised a number of the places mentioned in the book.
Marian describes the book as primarily a story of family loyalties, romance and crime set between Donegal and Edinburgh.
Speaking to the Donegal News after the launch Marian said it was a great success.
“I think people are interested in the local detail relating to Donegal and Edinburgh and the fact that the themes relate to family, romance and crime. Several people were buying it for Christmas for older relatives or people away from home.
“Local people were also asking staff in The Shamrock how they could get the book locally after the launch so we have left copies for sale in the bar,” she said.
‘The Deep Heart’s Core’ is a work of fiction with the main character Nora Gallagher (30) living with her old grandfather in Falcarragh. She is a graduate and has to leave the area to get employment. She is concerned about leaving her grandfather but also excited at the prospect of moving to the city,” she added.
Marian and her husband John have had a house in Gortahork for the past 20 years. Her late father was John Ward from Cragheyboyle near Dungloe who moved to Scotland where Marian was born. However, the family ties with Donegal have always remained strong with the author returning to the county as often as possible.
Marian and John live in Galashiels. Her own background is in education. She retired as Principal of a Further Education College last month having previously been a Head Teacher and a schools’ Inspector.
‘The Deep Heart’s Core’ is currently available from Shanway Press retailing at €10 and from Amazon.
