New lights at Polestar divides opinion

By Dionne Meehan

OPINIONS were divided this week following the erection of a new traffic light gantry near Letterkenny’s iconic Polestar sculpture.

As work nears completion, the Donegal News took to Facebook to ask the locals what their thoughts were on the new system.

Not holding back on their opinions, some locals feel the lights impact on the view of the iconic Polestar monument, with one describing them as being a “complete eyesore”.

“This spoils the approach view of the iconic Polestar landmark in Letterkenny,” another agreed.

However, this isn’t the only criticism the Donegal public had.

With the new gantry described as being “too low” by one person, they said the new set up will not prove beneficial for farmers carrying a high load.

“Nothing a good load of hay won’t get rid of,” one joked.

Others feel the new lights are “necessary” to reduce the traffic congestion coming into Letterkenny.

“The sooner the better,” one local said.

“It is about time,” agreed another.

With installation expected to be complete before the end of October, temporary periods of operating the lights will continue until the end of this year.

Full permanent operation of the lights is expected to be in place early in the New Year.
