PLANS have been lodged by a local community company in Newtowncunningham to rejuvenate and refurbish the Columban Hall in the village.
Built in the 1930s for a cost of around £700, the hall has served the parish since then but in more recent years fell into disuse. Today only the scouts use it.
However, all that is due to change thanks to a €12,500 grant from Donegal County Council and the strong drive in the community to revitalise all aspects of the village.
Speaking to the Donegal News this week Company Secretary of Columban Hall Community Ltd, Teresa McGee explained that because they had to apply for planning permission they decided to include all of their wish list for the hall.
“We plan to reinstate the allotments at the one side and have a sensory garden. We will link in with families who have children with autism. There will be a small play park and a permanent site for our Christmas tree.
“We are going to develop across the front to provide facilities for the youth in the area as they don’t really have anywhere to hang out except at the tourist information kiosk. It’s about revitalising the area,” Teresa added.
The village has benefited from having a strategic development plan done up which Teresa said energised everyone to make things better.
“While the pandemic held us back we are determined to make the best of what we have,” she said.
