“I know I have big shoes to fill replacing Columba Gill who has given decades of service to the paper and I wish him well in his retirement. This is a paper with a long and proud history telling the stories of the people of Donegal and raising the issues that are important to them.

“As well as having a long past, the Donegal News also has a bright future. The news industry has changed in many ways in recent years but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to the community and to providing first class journalism across our papers and online.”

Laura McMonagle has been appointed the new editor of the Donegal News.

Managing Director of the North-West News Group, Dominic McClements paid tribute to Columba who is retiring after 42 years with the company.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Columba for his four decades of service. He can hand over the reigns knowing that he has helped to develop the newspaper into one of distinction with a solid reputation for its news quality.

“The Donegal News has a long legacy of high quality journalists and editors and Columba has made his mark on the paper and leaves it in a very strong and healthy position.

“We are delighted to make the announcement that Laura McMonagle will be Columba’s successor. Laura has the unique distinction of being the first female editor which is something we are very proud of.
