A MAJOR new development in Lifford which will include a new social housing scheme, playing fields and new community health facilities, will be life-changing for the local community, according to the Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, John McLaughlin.
The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Niamh Kennedy this morning turned the sod on the new development at the Common in Lifford.
It marks the beginning of work that will enable proper infrastructure to be put in place, allowing for the future development of this site.
It will see the development of a new social housing scheme with 60 units, new playing fields that will enhance local recreational facilities, sites for economic development creating new job opportunities and new community health facilities.
Speaking at this morning’s event Cathaoirleach Kennedy described the development as transformative for the town and the wider area
“This development is a milestone for Lifford and by investing in housing, economic opportunities, and community and health facilities, we are shaping a future that is brighter and more prosperous for all,” she said.
“I commend everyone involved in bringing us to this point and look forward to seeing this project thrive.

John McLaughlin, Chief Executive of Donegal County Council also emphasised the project’s strategic importance.
“This development will be life-changing for families and businesses in Lifford and beyond,” he said.
“By combining housing, industry, and community-focused facilities, we are creating a sustainable foundation for growth. This is only possible thanks to the collaborative efforts of our teams and partners, and I look forward to seeing the progress ahead”.
Cllr. Gary Doherty, Chair of the Lifford Stranorlar Municipal District also spoke at the event.
“This project holds great significance for our Municipal District,” he said.
“As we know, Lifford is the capital town in Donegal and it is only fitting that Donegal County Council is making this substantial investment in the town.
“This project will be transformational for Lifford and is one of a number of investments that are in the pipeline for Lifford, including the €16 million investment announced recently for the new Riverine Park.”
He added that this development will ensure that Lifford continues to thrive and the combination of industrial, housing, and recreational facilities will provide jobs, homes, and opportunities that directly benefit our communities.
“It’s an exciting time for Lifford,” he added.

Mr McLaughlin also congratulated ACS Civils Ltd who have been recently appointed as the contractors for these works and also acknowledged McAdams Design for their work on the project.
The enabling infrastructure includes the construction of roads, footpaths with cycling provision, and infrastructure for water, wastewater, electricity, and telecommunications.
