New Cultural Calendar furthers commitment to diversity

Donegal County Council has pledged to continue its commitment to promoting cultural diversity in the county with its newly launched Cultural Calendar.

The calendar highlights key cultural and religious events celebrated by Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) across the county. By raising awareness of these events, the initiative aims to promote a sense of belonging and strengthen community cohesion across Donegal.

It reflects the diversity of Donegal’s communities and provides an opportunity for political leaders, organisations, and residents to celebrate and engage with the rich cultural tapestry of the county.

The initiative is part of the ‘EU Belong’ pilot project and is aligned with the BME Inclusion Strategy for Donegal 2021 – 2026. Action 24 of the BME Inclusion Strategy calls for identifying and acknowledging significant events in the cultural calendars of Black and Minority Ethnic communities.

Chief executive of Donegal County Council said, John G McLaughlin, said: “This Cultural Calendar highlights our continued commitment to delivering the Black and Minority Ethnic Inclusion Strategy. By recognising and celebrating the cultural and religious events of our communities, we take a step towards building a more inclusive, cohesive, and welcoming Donegal.”

The development of the calendar was informed by consultations with Black and Minority Ethnic communities, ensuring it represents the events most meaningful to them. It is hoped that this initiative will not only raise awareness but also inspire greater engagement with these important celebrations.
