THE organiser of a brand new Comedy Club in Letterkenny is hoping to attract more Donegal comedians to the big stage.
Michael Aiken (35), a gardener from Letterkenny, has launched Slaughter House Comedy, the newest and most anticipated comedy club opening its doors on July 6 at House Bar, Voodoo in Letterkenny.
The comedy club aims to bring audiences laughter on the first Thursday of every month, ensuring that humour remains a constant in their life.
Organiser Michael Aiken started stand up comedy in February of 2020.
He bravely took to the stage thanks to Rory McSwiggin and his club Chicken Box Comedy in Bennigans Bar in Derry. However, shortly after his first performance, the Covid-19 pandemic struck and put a pause to his stand up career.
Michael did not get back on the stage until November of last year but has since been flat out performing in the likes of Chicken Box in Derry, The Pavilion and Black Box in Belfast, the Green Room in Omagh and Mouthpiece Open Mic in the Cottage in Letterkenny, to name a few.
The comedian explained the inspiration for the Letterkenny Club came from performing in these venues.
“Being in these clubs I would always think it would be great if Letterkenny had something like this – a place for all levels of comedy from first timers to comics that want to try new material or sharpen their acts for bigger shows.
“That’s what audiences can expect, all levels of comedy.
“It’s something I feel the town has been missing, something different and a good night’s craic,” said Michael.
For the launch of the club, hilarious and charismatic host, Mick Sham will be orchestrating an unforgettable evening filled with side-splitting performances.
The inaugural lineup boasts an impressive array of comedic talent, headlined by the one and only Ciaran Franco. Kicking off the night is the uproarious Justin Freeburn, followed by the hilarious acts of Brónagh NicAoidh, Sean McAleavey, Adam Byrne, William Callahan, James McAuley, and Declan McBride.
Michael says he hopes the comedy club will encourage more Donegal comedians to give stand up a go.
“The line up on opening night is made up of mainly Northern comics to be honest but that’s because the scene is booming there.
“I hope that more people from Donegal get in touch if they’re looking to get started. I do have a few Donegal lads on line ups in the following months. There would not be too many yet but that is one of my goals with the club, to give local guys a place to get started,” said Michael.
Slaughter House Comedy kicks off on July 6 and is €5 at the door. Doors open at 8pm and show starts at 8.30pm.
