AFTER being ‘homeless’ for six months, the famous House of Books charity bookshop in Ballybofey is back in business in a brand new premises.
The popular shop, run by Mr Danny McIntyre, had raised more than €100,000 for local causes at its old haunt on the Main Street. However, six months after it closed its doors, it has reopened on the street between Jackson’s and the Villa Rose Hotel, at the rear of Alexander’s shop.
Speaking to the Donegal News this week, Mr McIntyre said the shop will now raise funds solely for the local branch of ‘Mary’s Meals’, an international charity that provides impoverished children with a daily meal.
“We only moved in last week after spending six months trying to find a suitable home,” he said.
“While we are now only raising money for one charity, we will continue to have a large and varied selection of rare books and collectibles. Book experts Liam Hoey and Chris Ingram are still with us, as is our resident book binder, Rob Salter. The only thing that has changed is that we have a nice bright, warm new premises with plenty of parking.”
The shop has an even bigger collection of rare and out-of-print books in stock as a result of a significant recent donation. It includes many publications of local interest, including the much sought after ‘Donegal Authors’ by Breda O’Halloran.
“We have a massive stock of books on all topics and I am looking forward to seeing many of our regular customers in the new shop.”
Mr McIntyre also appealed for people not to throw away old or unwanted books, stamps, photos, postcards or coins and, instead, donate them to the shop.
