New book celebrates 50 years of Glenree Sports Club

Mr John Cronin, the president of Athletics Ireland was one distinguished guest among many, who attended the launch of the book Glenree Sports Club: 50 years, at the Carrigart hotel on Saturday afternoon last.

“It’s a great privilege to stand here today as President of Athletics Ireland and proud member of Glenree Sports Club on this momentous occasion” he said. “This book chronicles not only the five decades of Glenree Sports Club’s athletic and soccer achievements, but also delves into the broader cultural, social and sporting history of our local area and Donegal. “ he added.

“This wonderful book recognises the tireless work of the founders, athletes, players and members, as well as the rich legacy of the club. Glenree Sports Club has enriched the lives of so many within our community and beyond” he said. “My early days with the club were formative years which shaped my life. As President of Athletics Ireland, it’s a deep personal joy to return to my roots wearing this historic chain of office” he said to a round of applause.

A host of well-known names and faces from the world of Irish sports and athletics turned out for what became a star-studded event, including Eamon Giles and Paddy Marley, both life Vice Presidents of Athletics Ireland, Patsy McGonagle, former Deputy President of Athletics Ireland, Brendan McDaid, Chair of the Ulster Athletics Council, and Teresa McDaid, who along with Paddy Marley and Patsy McGonagle, have the honour of being Olympic coaches. “It’s amazing to have three Olympic team managers in one room” said Mr Cronin.
