PLANS to appoint two neurological consultants between Letterkenny University Hospital and Sligo University Hospital have been welcomed.
The announcement was welcomed by Councillor Gerry McMonagle at the Regional Health Forum, West meeting in Galway on Tuesday.
Cllr McMonagle had pointed out in his question tabled to the Forum that “with over 46 per cent of the 675 MS patients based in the LUH Catchment area, has SAOLTA or LUH made an Application for Funding to provide a Full Time Neurology Consultant to
provide daily Neurology Cover at LUH?”
Cllr McMonagle complained that many patients from this area had to travel to Sligo as there was no full-time neurology service here.
“There is an argument there is sufficient work for two neurologists.
“Have we made any application for funding now the freeze on recruitment has been lifted. Put in an application as soon as possible.
“We have a complete survey of needs and agree neurological services at LUH need to be developed,” he told the meeting.
Interim CEO Ann Cosgrove responded that there would be two dedicated neurology consultants for LUH.
“It may take time but the commitment is there,” she added.
