THERE was a great deal of excitement this week in the seaside village of Narin during a handover celebration to mark an arrival that will definitely make the area more accessible.
Narin Beach Motorised Wheelchairs, based in picturesque southwest Donegal, was presented with a 4×4 mobility scooter.
The newly introduced scooter is available for anyone to use who needs it, simply by booking a time and day. Additionally, a mobile hoist is available if required.
The state-of-the-art machine was presented by local residents Phil and Michaela Lightowler in memory of Phil’s brother, Andrew Lightowler.
Andrew, who passed away one year ago at the age of 59, cherished the beach and spent many joyous days there on his scooter.
Born in Watford, England, Andrew faced numerous health challenges from birth, including cerebral palsy and multiple organ issues, compounded by cancer.
“Andrew would be delighted that others can enjoy access to the beach as he did,” said Paul Dawson who heads up the local motorised wheelchair programme.
Paul himself has been using a wheelchair for the past 13 years as he’s living with Multiple Sclerosis. He has paid tribute to Andrew who passed away this time last year.
“Andrew’s connection with Ireland began in 2018 during a holiday in Portnoo. After being hospitalised for a period in 2019, he moved to Ireland to live with his brother Phil and sister-in-law Michaela.
“It was here that Andrew’s love for the beach flourished, aided by an off-road buggy that allowed him to enjoy beach walks with the family dogs, Lara and Charlie,” explained Mr Dawson.
