Name of young Letterkenny drowning victim released

GARDAI are describing as ‘tragic’ the death of a young student from Sligo whose body was recovered near the Port Bridge in Letterkenny this afternoon.

The victim has been named as Edward Connell (22) of Sunset Drive, Cartron Point, Sligo. His family have been informed of his death.

He was student at the nearby Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) as was last seen at around 4 am this morning.

A search was initiated later in the morning following the discovery of personal belongings close to the bridge.

Gardai, assisted by members of the Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club, combed the River Swilly and its banks before making the discovery on the Cullion Road side of the bridge at around 2 pm.

A postmortem will be carried out at later this evening or tomorrow at Letterkenny University Hospital.

A spokesperson for Letterkenny Garda Station described the incident as ‘tragic’ and offered their sympathy to Mr Connell’s parents, Frank and Bríd.
