A NEW musical theatre group called Northwest Musical Theatre was set up by Andrea Emmet and Andrew Tinney, two performers who wanted to use their skills to inspire young people to work in the creative industry.
Andrea, who is a trained primary school teacher from Letterkenny, found herself questioning what she really wanted to do when Covid hit.
Taking the leap, Andrea decided to return to her studies and pursue acting professionally by completing a masters.
With only 30 people selected to do the course, Andrea decided she wanted to take everything she had learned back to her hometown to give her students more opportunities.
“When I went to London I realised not many people from my town were following that career path.
“I just thought I’d love to bring back the skill set and the expertise from the amazing teachers out there to the young people of Donegal,” she said.
Having worked with Andrew on various amateur productions, Andrea knew he was very passionate about working with young people.
Together the pair worked alongside a group of young people in preparation for their first ever show ‘High School Musical’ which is set to take to the stage in An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny from July 7 to July 8.
Speaking about the show, Andrea said the audition process was very successful with between 60 and 80 people attending from all over the North-West.
“There were a lot of eager and enthusiastic young people who were dying to be on the stage,” she said.
With An Grianan seating up to 380 people, Andrea said they decided to go in all guns blazing.
With a few helping with costumes and set design, plenty of work happened behind the curtain ahead of the big performance.
