Murphy rules himself out of Donegal managerial race

Michael Murphy has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Donegal job as he says he has a lot of learning to do before considering it.

The Donegal legend also cited the time commitment as a deterrent to his consideration as he has only recently realised the dedication that has to be given is becoming ever increasing.

The Glenswilly man retired from intercounty football after the end of the Donegal season last year, but is still lining out for his local club.

Paddy Carr came in along with Aidan O’Rourke for the departing Declan Bonner but Carr left before the end of the League campaign which saw Donegal relegated to Division 2.

Aidan O’Rourke stepped up for the season with Paddy Bradley and despite losing in the Ulster quarter-final to Down, Donegal went on to finish second in the All-Ireland series group with wins over Clare and Monaghan.

But the loss to Tyrone just over a week ago ended their season and O’Rourke confirmed he would be stepping away, which has led to Donegal inviting applications for the vacant role.

Upon being asked if he would throw his hat into the ring, Murphy said: “Not yet. Listen, the timing last year the reason I moved away from playing was the whole energy thing of what’s required on an everyday basis, I struggled to give and I knew myself I struggled to give and moving into intercounty management is a big thing, seeing the way recent managers that have took on the role.

“Playing you get an opportunity to rest for a few hours of the day to try and perform at your best but management, in order to do it right and the way it needs to be done its massive hours every single day.

“Added into the fact I need to go and learn the trade, figure out coaching and management.

“I’ve been taking the local minors for the last couple of years and at that level I give it my all for a couple of days a week.

“But that’s what it is, a couple of days a week. I’m not foolish enough to know that I could throw myself into something.

“If you had asked the question 5/6 years ago I’d have said intercounty management I’d love to give it a crack but the more I see of what’s involved in it in recent years, the more it wouldn’t be a concrete yes answer.

“But definitely I’ll do everything I can to put myself in a position to see if I enjoy it.”
