National Breastfeeding Week is marked each year from October 1 to 7, it is an opportunity to discuss the importance of breastfeeding as the normal and healthy way to feed babies and young children.
Parents and families across Donegal are invited to celebrate the unique connection between baby and parent, with this year’s national theme: “Hold Me Close – The Power of skin-to-skin contact.”
Skin-to-skin contact in the early moments and days after birth supports babies in every way from regulating temperature and breathing to building emotional security and establishing breastfeeding.
Mary McFeely Public Health Nurse, Lactation Consultant, Donegal said, “Breastfeeding is a powerful foundation for lifelong health it provides essential nutrients, strengthens the immune system, and promotes bonding between parent and child.
“Our goal is to ensure every family receives the encouragement and resources they need to make informed feeding choices.”
A vibrant new wall mural celebrating breastfeeding was officially unveiled today in Newtowncunningham Primary Care Centre.

Fiola Murphy, Child Health Programme Development Officer, Health and Wellbeing said, “The wall mural was designed and painted by Donegal artists Shaun McFadden and Kevin Gallagher. This wall mural is not only a celebration of the bond between mother and child, but also a wider symbol of health, growth, and community.
“By highlighting breastfeeding as the foundation of lifelong health, the mural reminds us that good habits begin early. The joyful images of children at play with their kites, reinforce the message that a healthy lifestyle extends beyond infancy. It is nurtured through good nutrition, active living, and supportive environments.
“Together, the mural tells a story of strong beginnings, happy childhoods and healthier futures for families and communities”
Dermot Monaghan, Integrated Health Area Manager Donegal attended the event and said, “The mural is a joyful and empowering addition and a wider initiative to promote awareness, support, and education around infant feeding and early bonding.
“I’m delighted to see our new breastfeeding wall mural come to life. It’s a public reminder that breastfeeding is normal, natural, and something to be celebrated. I hope every parent who sees it will feel welcomed, encouraged, and supported in their breastfeeding journey.”
The mural aims to create a welcoming space for families and promote public understanding of breastfeeding as a natural and important aspect of infant development.
