AN inquest into the deaths of a father and his two children, who lost their lives when their car skidded into water near Quigley’s Point more than five years ago, has been adjourned for a year as a criminal case is due to come before Letterkenny Circuit Court later this month.
John Mullan (49) and his two children Tómas (14) and six-year-old Amelia tragically lost their lives in August 2020.
The family were returning home to Donegal after a family day out across the border in Derry when the tragedy happened.
The children’s mother and John’s wife, Geraldine, was the sole survivor.
On Friday, the Mullan family inquest was listed for a mention at the Coroner’s Court in Letterkenny courthouse.
The inquest was told that on October 11, 2024, the inquests into the deaths of Mr Mullan and his two children was once again opened. At that time, the inquest heard that a criminal case had been initiated and was still in progress.
Garda Inspector Sean McDaid had told the inquest: “As a result of this, Detective Inspector David Durkin requested that I would adjourn this case. Following the consideration in relation to all the different matters, for example, a widow awaiting an inquest and the fact there’s a criminal investigation going on because it is requested under Section 25.2, I feel I have no option but to adjourn this.”
The inquest was adjourned until today to assess the progress. Earlier today, the inquest was adjourned to October 30, 2026.
The criminal case is listed for arraignment at Letterkenny Circuit Court on October 28, 2025.
