ON Saturday, the 9th of February, An Grianán Theatre is offering a rare opportunity for residents of the north west of Ireland to see a national operatic production as the Opera Theatre Company stage Cosi Fan Tutte, Mozart’s classic tale of young love and deception.
This story of the cynical and manipulative Don Alfonso’s attempts to win a wager concerning the fidelity (or lack thereof) of the wives of two young men is brought to vivid life by such talents as Irish soprano Mairead Buicke as Fiordiligi and mezzo soprano Martha Bredin as Dorabella.
They are joined on stage by Colette Delahunt singing the role of Despina, Sune Hjerrild as Ferrando, Owen Gilhooly as Guglielmo and Simon Wilding playing Don Alfonso.
The Opera Theatre Company are renowned for bringing authentic opera to the stage in an accessible and professional fashion, allowing novices and aficionados alike to enjoy the spectacle of productions such as The Magic Flute and Monteverdi’s Orfeo.
The current tour of Cosi Fan Tutte employs a minimalist style, with sensitive editing of the material allowing for a more compact rendition of the piece which the Irish Times calls an “intelligent, sensitive production … a memorable and very enjoyable evenings entertainment”.
So come along and see the sights in the “Magical Emporium of Dottore Alfonso” for a night that is sure to leave you beguiled by the magic of opera. Please note that the show begins at the earlier-than-usual time of 7.30pm.
