A KILMACRENNAN teenager has been selected from more than 3,000 motorbike riders for the prestigious International Red Bull Rookies GP Select.
Caolan Irwin was chosen after a rigorous selection process which took place in Spain last week. Over 3,000 teen riders from around the globe applied for the prestigious event and 109 were selected. Hopefuls were invited to attend the selections.
Tensions were high as 16 year-old Caolan took his opportunity to shine on the world stage of motorcycle sport and he did not disappoint. Caolan has now been selected as one of the world’s fastest teen riders and will be joining the last thirty from around the world including USA, Japan and Australia. He is currently sponsored by Oasis Bar Letterkenny
He will now be judged by an experienced panel of judges. The panel includes former Grand Prix racer and Engineer Harold Bartol, Austrian motorcycle legend August Auinger, former Red Bull Yamaha team owner Peter Clifford and high performance riding school instructor Dani Ribalta.
Since its inception in 2007 the Red Bull Rookies Cup has grown into one of the most thrilling two-wheel spectacles in the world. The Rookies Cup has released new stars into the world of Grand Prix racing and produced GP winners.
Another young Kilmacrennan lad, Richard Kerr, was also selected for the trials.
Successful riders will be given a full factory rider in next years Rookies Moto3 championship on the European legs of the Moto GP Championship.Current World Superbike star Eugene Laverty is a former winner of the competition.
