Motorist was driving at 174kph to get to ‘Chinese’

A Strabane man caught hurtling along Letterkenny’s dual carriage told gardai he was rushing to get to the Chinese takeaway.

Martin O’Neill (21) of Curly Hill was detected by Garda speed cameras doing 174kph at Trimragh on September 7 this year.

A Garda officer was on patrol at Newtowncunningham when a black Audi sped past him.
It was going so fast that he was unable to keep tabs on it but a short while later he did encounter the vehicle again.

It was doing 174kph at the time and after getting the Audi stopped, the officer asked O’Neill about his speed.

He told him he was in a rush because the Chinese was about to close.

Solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher said his client was going to get food for his partner and that he was “deeply apologetic” about what had happened.

O’Neill was ordered to take the Pro Social driving course and donate €200 towards the initiative.
