Most graveyards in Letterkenny are now full – Cllr Bradley

LOOKING ahead to a newly elected council in June, Letterkenny-Milford MD Mayor Cllr Kevin Bradley has called on the council executive to commit to working with the new council on the need for new graveyard space around Letterkenny.

“Most graveyards are full and we have a very serious situation here at the moment,” Mayor Bradley told Tuesday’s council meeting.

Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly seconded Cllr. Bradley’s motion adding that the situation “is a major concern out there among the public”.

Responding the council executive stated: “In 2020, Donegal County Council undertook a significant survey of graveyard provision and capacity in the county. The survey examined the status of all graveyards within the functional area of Donegal County Council.

“The Council is actively considering the provision of a new burial ground and is working with a number of stakeholders, including; The Inter-Church Group on Community Graveyard Provision in Donegal: The Black and Ethnic Minority Group: The Intercultural Platform; Non-Denominational Groups. This engagement has allowed the Council to gain a wider understanding of the requirements for multi-denominational burial arrangements in Donegal.

“The Environment Section will commit to engage with the newly elected council on the provision of burial grounds.

“The initial focus will be on areas of greatest need, particularly the greater Letterkenny area, which has the largest population and the greatest cultural diversity. This approach can then be considered as a potential model for the rest of the county.”
