MORE than 400 drivers have been fined in Donegal so far this year for driving while holding a mobile phone.
New figures from An Garda Síochána have revealed that 438 drivers have been issued with a fixed charge notice for the offence by Gardai in the Donegal Division.
This compares to 578 fines issued in 2020 which was down from 613 fines in 2019 and 460 in 2018.
Nationally 20,414 fines have been issued across the country and the highest number of offences was recorded in the Kildare Division with 2071 fines followed by Meath (1,327).
The figures were released following a parliamentary question by Kildare North TD Catherine Murphy.
Gardai have warned that you are four times more likely to crash if holding or using a mobile while driving.
“Please switch off before you drive off. Your behaviour as a driver matters,” said a Garda spokesperson.
“Should you take risks and make poor decisions then you are risking your life and the lives of all other road users.
“Please make a conscious decision before you get behind the wheel of any vehicle to make road safety your priority.
“One poor decision could have life changing consequences for you or others.”
