More than 300 Covid-19 related deaths in Donegal

THERE have been more than 300 deaths related to Covid-19 in Donegal, according to a new report from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

From March 1, 2020 to January 6, 2024 there were 339 Covid-19 related deaths in the county which has a mortality rate of 213 per 100,000.

Nationally there were 920 fatalities involving the virus in 2023 although the final number will not be known until the early part of this year because of the three-month lag in notifications.

This figures compares to 2,403 Covid-related deaths nationwide in 2022 while the worst year for pandemic-linked deaths was 2021 when 3,827 people died.

The counties with the highest death rate are Mayo, Louth, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Carlow, Limerick, Dublin, Donegal, Waterford, Wexford and Clare. The county with the lowest rate of death is Sligo followed by Tipperary.

Higher levels of immunity among the population due to vaccination and previous infection, as well as variants have helped reduce the risk of deterioration.

Donegal had the lowest take-up of the booster vaccine this winter with just 22.5 per cent of those over 50 getting the jab. The counties with the highest uptake are Dublin, Wicklow and Cork.
