THERE are now more than 2,600 people on the social housing waiting list in Donegal.
The latest figures from Donegal County Council show there are 2,663 people waiting which includes those on the transfer list.
The Letterkenny Municipal District has the highest with 1,064 people on the waiting list in this area. The majority of these are waiting for housing in the Letterkenny town area (845).
Other areas in this Municipal District with high numbers waiting include Ramelton (48) and Kilmacrennan (45).
The Inishowen Municipal District had the second highest number of people on the social housing list with 645. The highest numbers in this MD were in Buncrana (268) followed by Carndonagh (106).
The Donegal Municipal District had 395 people on list while the Lifford-Stranorlar MD has a waiting list of 346. The Twin Towns had the highest numbers waiting in this MD (142) followed by Lifford (72).
The Glenties MD had the lowest number at 213.
The areas with the highest numbers were Dungloe (47) followed by Falcarragh (28) and Gaoth Dobhair (25).
The figures were released from the Housing Section following a question by Cllr Martin Harley at last week’s meeting of the Council.
He was told in a written response that of the 2,663 people, 937 were on the waiting list and 1,726 were on the transfer list.
“The transfer list includes applicants who are in receipt of the Housing Assistance Payment which is a form of social housing support and is a payment that is made directly to the landlord towards the rent of an applicant who has been approved on the housing waiting list,” the response stated.
“The transfer list also includes tenants of the Council who have been approved for a transfer as a result of a change in their circumstances, e.g requirement for ground for accommodation due to medical needs.”
