More probation officers needed in Donegal

MORE probation officers are being sought in Donegal to meet the rising demand of the service.

Letterkenny District Court has been told of the pressures facing the Probation Service, who are inundated referrals from the court.

A probation report can be ordered by a judge for a defendant who comes before the court on a criminal offence – and who has either pleaded guilty or is found not guilty – before handing down their sentence.

The Probation Service protects the public and create safer communities by helping offenders to desist from committing more crime. The Probation Service have a strong record of reducing re-offending, and managing offenders safely in the community.

The Probation Service is now actively recruiting probation officers in Donegal as part of a nationwide campaign to address the heavy workload of the service.

A spokesperson for the Probation Service told the Donegal News: “The Probation Service is actively strengthening the team of Probation Officers in the North West through a nationwide recruitment campaign, with new staff members to be appointed to Donegal.”
